SD Libraries Will Lose Funding in 2026

Negotiations are still underway before the City of San Diego's final 2025-26 fiscal year budget is voted on June 10.  As a result of previous City Council budget meetings,  the San Diego Public Library system is scheduled to lose $8million in funding.  As of July 1, 2025, this loss of funding may result in the closing of all 37 Branch Libraries on Sunday and Monday, but will allow  programs and services to remain the same Tuesday-Saturday. 2023-SRP Roundup

  The 2023 summer vacation period was shorter than most, as local schools started the 23-24 school year earlier.  However, the San Carlos Branch Library still had 1116 patrons register for the annual Summer Reading Program.  Of those participating, 768 met their reading goals and collected their prizes.  Congratulations and keep on reading! How San Carlos Got Its Library

  What factors came together that spearheaded the building of our current San Carlos Branch Library? The answer: San Carlos  Community activists and a non-fulfilled promise. In the 1960s, the Tavares Development Company assured buyers that the new San Carlos area would quickly become a complete neighborhood, with retailers, eateries, churches, fire houses, parks & rec centers, schools, and a library.  By 1970, this mission had been accomplished, minus the library. March, 2014: Landmark Book Sale

Despite the rain, 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2014, was a time for celebration. New SDPL EXCEL Cards for Grades TK-12

  The Student EXCEL Card program is a collaborative effort between San Diego Public Library and San Diego Unified School District with the goal to get a library card in the hands of every student in the district by 2025.
