SD Libraries Will Lose Funding in 2026

Negotiations are still underway before the City of San Diego final 2025-26 fiscal year budget is voted on in May.  As a result of the April City Council meetings,  the San Diego Public Library system is scheduled to lose $8million in funding.  As of July 1, 2025, this loss of funding will result in the closing of all 37 Branch Libraries on Sunday and Monday, which will allow  programs and services to remain the same Tuesday-Saturday. Library Cards for Digital Access

The Library is offering a new Digital Library Card. If you don't currently have a Library Card, you can now sign up for a Digital Library Card to access eLibrary resources. With a Digital Library Card you can download digital materials (such as ebooks, eaudiobooks and digital magazines), use electronic databases, take online classes, and much more. Customers may convert their digital library card into a permanent physical library card by contacting any of the Pickup Service Locations.
