SD Libraries Will Lose Funding in FY 2025-2026 San Diego Budget

Negotiations are still underway before the City of San Diego's final 2025-26 fiscal year budget is voted on June 10.  It will not be finalized until signed by San Diego's Mayor Todd Gloria on June 15, 2025 As a result of previous City Council budget meetings,  the San Diego Public Library system is scheduled to lose $8million in funding.  As of July 1, 2025, this loss of funding may result in the closing of all 37 Branch Libraries on Sunday... Volunteers Recognized

Wednesday, May 20, 2015,  the San Carlos Friends of the Library and  San Carlos Branch Library Volunteers were recognized with a pizza party get-together in the Winer Family Community Room and Art Gallery. All active 2014 volunteers were invited to attend.  There was a special presentation made to the volunteers by City Councilman Scott Sherman's representative, congratulating the volunteers for their hours of service.  From January 1 through December 31, 2014, our  volunteers donated 2653 hours sorting and selling books... San Carlos Area Council presents donation to San Carlos Branch Library

  We thank the San Carlos Area Council for its $500 contribution to the San Carlos Branch Library.  Managing Librarian Rita Glick accepted the check from SCAC representatives (from left), Jay Coulter, John Pilch, (Rita Glick) and Mickey Zeichek.  The funds will be used to purchase a new podium for the library.  John is also one of our dedicated library volunteers.  The community is welcome to attend. ORLIE BAIRD: In Memoriam

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Orlie Baird on March 26, 2015. .  Orlie was a great friend to the San Carlos Branch Library, and a past SCFOL Board Member and volunteer. Born in Minnesota on August 16, 1924, he served 34 years in the U.S. Navy, which he joined in March, 1943.  He served in the South Pacific; received his commission as a Navy Ensign in 1949; and commanded the U.S.S. CONGRATULATIONS: Logan McKerring

  CONGRATULATIONS to Green Elementary School’s fourth grader Logan McKerring, (his teacher is Louise Volpe). Logan was named one of four, fourth grade, Grand Prize winners in this year’s City-wide, 18th annual Writing for Literacy, Library Essay Contest, started by our own Jack Winer. “The Book Thief,” was the book he would save if all others were to be destroyed. Meet Our Book Sale Manager: Ron McFee

  COMICS: A literary form read world-wide, was first introduced to the American public in 1842. But not until 1934, with the publication of the first comic books and the 1938 introduction of Superman, did the Golden Age of Comics begin.
