ORLIE BAIRD: In Memoriam

Orlie Bard, It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Orlie Baird on March 26, 2015. .  Orlie was a great friend to the San Carlos Branch Library, and a past SCFOL Board Member and volunteer. Born in Minnesota on August 16, 1924, he served 34 years in the U.S. Navy, which he joined in March, 1943.  He served in the South Pacific; received his commission as a Navy Ensign in 1949; and commanded the U.S.S. Lorikeet, U.S.SD. Cogswell, Commodore Escort Squadron FIVE and U.S.S. Mount Whitney.  He also commanded the Naval Communications Station in Morocco, and was fleet Communications offer for the United States Pacific Fleet. He held a B.S. in Physics, Post Graduate Naval training in Monterrey and the War College in Newport, earned an M.A. in International Affairs from George Washington University, and an MBA from SDSU.  He enjoyed a second career with Logicon.  Following retirement, Orlie was an active VITA tax program, SCFOL, and church volunteer.  We extend our condolences to his family, and especially to his wife, Gay who monthly graced the used book sale volunteers with snacks.  We will miss his gentle voice and endearing smile.
