JUNE Artist: Glenn Osga

Our June 5- July 3 artist, Glenn Osga, is a true renaissance man. A self-taught artist,     preschooler Osga began sketching everything from dinosaurs to faces and scenery in the margins of books and on any handy piece of paper. Osga describes himself as “a true art junkie.”  Come meet this amazing artist at his Artist Reception June 22, noon – 2 p.m., in the Winer Family Community Room & Art Gallery of the San Carlos Branch Library.

A native of Connecticut, Osga attended college in Vermont and graduate school at the University of South Dakota where he earned his PhD in Human Factors Psychology.  He has lived in San Diego since 1980.  For 30 years he was employed as a scientist at the Navy Point Loma lab. This job has brought him to work on projects all around the US and world with NATO.  Several projects that he was involved with include one for the National Security Council at the White House re-engineering the Situation Room processes; working with the Space command in Colorado; and special Navy projects.  He is currently a consultant for Leidos San Diego.

Art and music occupy Osga’s fun time.  He creates music for Improv Comedy working at Finest City Improv in Hillcrest doing shows in a group called Sunset Cleffs. The group makes up a musical on the spot based on audience suggestions while Osga creates the music on the piano. Also, an expert with the accordion, Osga played with the Coronado Community Band at Coronado’s Spreckels Park for this year’s April Flower Show.  Yes, he had a Band that played around San Diego in the 80s, and currently plays keyboard with a band on Sundays at the Palisades Presbyterian Church in Allied Gardens.

Osga tells us, “In truth, I am anxious to retire to have more time for art and music. I enjoy painting at any spare moment!  I do a variety of subjects such as landscapes, wildlife, pets, trains, cars, and portraits.   I love painting scenes during and after travel, having fun doing several plein air pieces in Guatemala last year.   I use acrylics most of the time, and oils less frequently.  Every painting teaches me something new.

“I am inspired by the Masters such as Joaquin Sorolla, having visited his museum in Madrid where I was moved to tears standing in his studio. He was a master at capturing light in his works often featuring beach scenes. I created reproductions of two of his works for the annual “Old Masters” show at Foothills Gallery in La Mesa.    I exhibit and sell railroad focused artwork at the Train Store in Silverton Colorado where the Durango & Silverton railroad runs their spectacular scenic ride and I also have painted several pet portraits for clients and friends.”

Glenn Osga is a member of Foothills Art Gallery in La Mesa and South-bay Art Association.  Check out his website:  www.glennieartist.com for existing artwork or contact Osga at [email protected] to commission a new piece.
