JULY ARTIST: Gwen Small

July 3-August 5,  we are excited to have the photography of  Gwen Small   on display in the Winer Family Community Room & Art Gallery of the San Carlos Branch LIbrary. During her career as a teacher of writing and English as a Second Language, Small introduced many art forms to her students, including school trips to local theaters, operas, and art galleries.  Come join Gwen in celebrating her beautiful and interesting photography at her Artist Reception to be held at the SCBL on Saturday, July 20, noon-2 pm.

While teaching, Small enriched her love of art by taking classes in drawing and art history. About eight years ago, Small began her exploration of digital photography as a means of self-expression, and was inspired to pursue photography as an art form by participating in classes offered by San Diego’s Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA).

Small’s prize-winning photography has been exhibited at the San Diego Museum of Photographic Art (auction), The Open Show (San Diego), and The San Diego Art Institute (auction). Small was selected as one of 52 winners to be honored, out of 850 entries, at a show sponsored by Inova, in Reno Nevada. In addition to being on display, the winners’ art was published in a coffee table book. Small’s photo of a rose was recognized as one of nine “Noteworthy Entries” reprinted in the San Diego Floral Association’s July/August 2023 edition of California Garden. Her photos appear regularly in Southern California art exhibits.

Small brings fresh eyes to even the most mundane subjects. Abstracts—both urban and natural– are Gwen’s passion. Currently she is exploring the possibilities of dramatic color manipulation in photography. After recently completing Nicholas Wilton’s intensive Creative Vision Program, she is exploring other media as well and has recently shown paintings at Gallery 21 in Spanish Village – Balboa Park, and Brooks Theater Gallery in Oceanside.
