SCFOL’s New Art Chair: Sarah Rowland Calahan
Introducing Sarah Rowland Calahan, SCFOL’s New Art Show Chair, 2025
When the Rowland Calahan family joined SCFOL this spring, Sarah immediately expressed her interest in supporting SCFOL and the San Carlos Branch Library with her knowledge of art. It is with our great pleasure that she accepted the SCFOL Art Chair position, previously held, since 2014, by our fabulous Barbara Stewart who recently retired.
An artist herself, Sarah has been a part of the art world for many years and earned a BA in Art and Art History from Stanford, an MFA in Painting and Drawing from Arizona State University, and her MA in teaching from Chapman.
During the past twelve years, Calahan has taught Santana High art students drawing, painting, ceramics, jewelry, college, printmaking, AP Art & Design and AP Art History. Currently, Sarah also teaches Grossmont College’s “Dual Enrollment Art” at Santana HS and actively works to display her students’ creations by having them entered into exhibits and shows. In 2021-2022 Calahan also served as Art Council President.
While at Santana HS, Sarah’s family grew and they moved to San Carlos. The Rowland Calahan blended family includes Sarah’s English teacher husband Joel Calahan, their high-schoolers Ezra (17) and Augie (14) Calahan, plus Henry Rowland (12) who attends Pershing, and Silas Calahan (8) is a student at Benchley Weinberger. We welcome them all to San Carlos and hope to see them all become active SCFOL volunteers like Sarah! Welcome Aboard!
