Winer Family Community Room & Art Gallery Dedication
On November 19, 2014, before the Annual Meeting of the General Membership of SCFOL, Rocky, Gene, and Michael Winer, sons of Jack & Carolyn Winer, unveiled new signage over the two entrances to the San Carlos Branch Library’s community room, dedicating and renaming it the “WINER FAMILY Community Room & Art Gallery.” At the meeting, SCFOL President, Judy Williams introduced the “Winer boys,” and read congratulatory remarks from Past SCFOL & FSDPL President Ann McDonald who was not able to attend the ceremony. In 1999, Ann was recruited by Jack Winer to follow him as the SCFOL President, enabling him to take on the duties of FSDPL President. Jack served as SCFOL President from 1992-1999. Past SCFOL President and City Council member, Judy McCarty then spoke of Jack’s tenacity which was instrumental in obtaining the corner lot which will be used for the expansion of the San Carlos Branch Library; his creation of the annual Writing for Literacy, Library Essay Contest for 4th, 8th, and 10th graders, which grew to be a city-wide event open to all students in the city of San Diego; and his work as an originator of the now, KPBS & Library sponsored “One Book, One San Diego,” selection. We celebrate and thank the four generations of Winers who continue to support the San Diego Library System.
