JUNE Artist: Lucas Smith

From June 4 – June 30,on display in the Winer family Community Room & Art Gallery of the San Carlos Branch Library, Lucas Smith will be displaying his vibrant, textural works of art.  Lucas has brought a fresh perspective to abstract art, blending imagination, raw materials and refined techniques to create pieces that invite viewers on a journey of exploration. Introduce yourself to his unique contemporary abstract art and meet this award-winning artist at his Artist Reception on June 21, noon to 2 p.m.

Smith’s artistic roots trace back to his grandmother’s bold quilt designs and oil paintings, and the encouragement given to him by his middle and high school art teachers. In 2021,Lucas relocated to San Diego from the midwest to continue his artistic journey by taking classes and workshops, including those at the San Diego Watercolor Society (SDWS) in Liberty Station.  There, he became a member, a dedicated volunteer, and now serves as assistant Director of International Exhibition for 2025.

Smith also completed a 24-week Artist Development & Mentorship Program at Ashton Art Gallery, where he studied under renowned local artists Kate Ashton, Brenda York, and Kristen Guest. Currently, Lucas is the Director of Ashton Art Gallery & Studios, overseeing daily operations, managing exhibitions, while continuing his own artistic studies.  Lucas is also a resident artist in Studio #2 at Ashton Art Gallery at Art on 30th, and invites you to stop by M-F, 10a.m.-4p.m.

In 2024, Lucas held his first solo exhibition at Gallery 21 in Spanish Village, selling a record 22 paintings in two weeks;  fifty in 2024.  His paintings are now part of collections across the U.S and the Netherlands.

Lucas is a member of COAL (Carlsbad Oceanside art League), The San Diego Watercolor Society, OMA Artist Alliance, Sergeant Art Group, Foothills Art Association and the San Diego Museum of Art.  Lucas is passionate about fostering community within the art world. To this end, he launched Art Connect, an online network that links artists to regional, national, and international opportunities while encouraging collaboration and mutual support.

Lucas Smith tells us why he feels art is so important. “Art is healing.  It stimulates the brain, creates new neurons, and expands the mind.  For me, the process is deeply transformative and restorative. My paintings are interpretations of moments and memories–powerful works that evoke emotion and embrace edginess.  Through dynamic brushstrokes and layered textures, my art is meant not only to inspire but also to soothe the mind and tell a story.”  His inspirations come from the beauty of nature that he daily encounters.  He says, “My work reflects the energy I feel and transforms it into visual stories on canvas.  It mirrors my ongoing growth and self-discovery as an artist.  My pieces begin with sketches, evolving naturally as layers build, each carrying its own unique meaning.  Movement, flow, and authenticity guide my creative process.”
