Colby told us, “The works in this exhibit grew years ago out of a desire to make pictures from a more internal source, unplanned work that grows and “becomes” as it is produced. The medium is pen and ink, a natural choice from all the years of producing black and white drawings for print publication. The drawings stayed in that format for several years. Color came slowly, tentatively– in an undirected, unplanned way –slow work– more yin than yang. Colored pencil is the medium most conducive to this process. The subject matter is always a surprise; inhabitants of the subconscious mind come out to be seen.”
