NOVEMBER 8-30: The Foothills Art Association present “The Old Masters”

Original portrait by Leonardo Da Vinci interpreted by Roberta LaBastida

November 8-30: We have such a treat for you!  The Old Masters come to the San Carlos Branch Library!  There will be Van Goghs, Monets, Rembrandts, and maybe even a Botticelli as well as other world-renowned artists on display at the San Carlos Library in November. We might even see the Mona Lisa and the Girl with the Pearl Earring !

Well, nearly… as members of the Foothills Art Association show their faithful watercolor or oil copies of some of the world’s most famous paintings.  Artists include Marty Armstrong, Bill Barr, Sunny Borkat,  Elsiemae  Cleeton, Joy Farrar, Roberta Labastida, Toby Scriba, Stephen Smith, and Hazel Waters who has put together this amazing show for us. Each painting is marked with the original title and the  term “d’apres” (meaning ‘after’ the original), the name of the original artist and the signature of the copying artist.

Hazel Water’s rendition of a portrait by Jean Etienne Liotard. The original hangs in the Getty Museum.

Original by Liotard. Portrait of Maria Frederike van Reede-Athlone at Seven Years of Age, Swiss, 1755 – 1756

Sizes and medium may differ from the original but there is no doubting the original work. Sub note because of the “no nudes policy” there will be no old masterly nakedness… but look out for an adaptation of the famous Manet “Olympia”.

Have some refreshments, and meet the artists at their Artist Reception on Saturday, November 18, noon-2 p.m. in the Branch’s Winer Community Room & Art Gallery.”
